Basketball Rebounding Tips

Offensive Rebounding
As a team strategy, it is a good idea to have one player responsible for running back when the team shoots. For other players the strategy is simple, go get the ball! Don't stop just because the ball doesn't bounce directly to you. Chase the ball wherever it goes.

Keep in mind that a majority of missed shots bounce to the opposite side from where the shot is taken. So it is a good strategy to run to that side as soon as the shot is taken.

Furthermore, the offensive player should not "accept" the box out. Instead, try to get around or avoid the box out. The video below shows four techniques for defeating an attempted box out.

Defensive Rebounding
As soon as the other team takes a shot, go to the person you are guarding. Make light contact with your forearm but be careful not to extend the forearm or a foul may be called. After contact turn to face the basket while maintaining contact and keeping your body between the basket and other player. This process is called "boxing out." Once the ball hits the rim, go get the ball.
