Basketball Man to Man Defense

Guarding a player away from the ball

A reminder: we are focusing on basics for youth or other beginners. More experienced players will need to learn more advanced techniques.

For this discussion we must distinguish the location of the ball. Let's assume there is an imaginary line between the two baskets. This is called the "midline." Is the ball on the same side of that line as the person you are guarding?

Same side: Stay between the basket and the person you are guarding. When possible, use your "guns". This means that you are constantly pointing at the ball and at the person you are guarding. This is important because you must always know the location of both.

Different side: Have at least one foot on the "midline". Make certain to use your "guns".

Regardless of the location of the ball, you should be on your toes with your knees bent. You are ready to move quickly. If an opposing player dribbles towards the basket you will leave your person and guard the person with the ball. If someone else guards the person with the ball, you can return to your normal position. You cannot stand and watch as that player shoots a layup.
